Lakeside Book Club

Did you know that reading improves focus, memory, empathy, and communication skills? It can reduce stress, improve your mental health, and help you live longer!

The Lakeside book club offers an opportunity to read and discuss enjoyable books with friends. Besides making the reading experience more fun, discussing with others spurs more commitment to help you stay on track!

Here’s how the book club works: Every month we pick a book or two to read together and at the end of the month we meet to discuss it in a friendly atmosphere.

What we are reading for September 2023:

Shoe Dog
  1. Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike, Phil Knight
In this candid and riveting memoir, for the first time ever, Nike founder and CEO Phil Knight shares the inside story of the company’s early days as an intrepid start-up and its evolution into one of the world’s most iconic, game-changing, and profitable brands.

Knight details the many risks and daunting setbacks that stood between him and his dream—along with his early triumphs. Above all, he recalls the formative relationships with his first partners and employees, a ragtag group of misfits and seekers who became a tight-knit band of brothers. Together, harnessing the transcendent power of a shared mission, and a deep belief in the spirit of sport, they built a brand that changed everything.
  2. Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty by Daron Acemoğlu, James A. Robinson
Why Nations Fail

Is it culture, the weather, or geography? Perhaps ignorance of what the right policies are?

Simply, no. None of these factors is either definitive or destiny. Otherwise, how to explain why Botswana has become one of the fastest growing countries in the world, while other African nations, such as Zimbabwe, the Congo, and Sierra Leone, are mired in poverty and violence?

Based on fifteen years of original research Acemoglu and Robinson marshall extraordinary historical evidence from the Roman Empire, the Mayan city-states, medieval Venice, the Soviet Union, Latin America, England, Europe, the United States, and Africa to build a new theory of political economy with great relevance for the big questions of today.

Why Nations Fail will change the way you look at—and understand—the world.
